It's officially the week of Valentines, eeek! Hands up if you're excited - I know I am! Some people aren't into Valentine's day, but I'm definitely not one of them. I love having a little day dedicated to our relationship as well as our anniversary - it just makes spending time together on the day seem more special.
And with Valentines Day literally round the corner, I thought now would be the perfect time to share some of my top picks for red lips to celebrate the day of lurveee. I'm sure most girls love an excuse to rock a red lip, or even treat themselves to a new lipstick for that day. Thankfully my collection has grown quite a bit since I got into blogging, so I had a lot to choose from. Believe me, it was hard lowering my choices down to just five - I reckon I could have gone on with around twenty different choices!
This Valentines day, myself and Liam are spending the day at work. How romantic! Granted Liam is only at work until 5, and I'm only heading in for a quick meeting, but still. I guess I can still get a bit glammed up beforehand, ready for a nice meal in the evening, right?
The only problem is - which red lipstick to choose? A deep, rich matte red, or more of a sheer gloss?
Soap & Glory 'Sexy Mother Pucker' Gloss Stick in 'Plum Jam'
My first choice, Soap & Glory's iconic lipgloss has always been a firm favourite of mine. In fact, I'm sure my first ever lip product was the 'Sexy Mother Pucker' plumping lip gloss! So naturally it would have found its way in somewhere.
The 'Plum Jam' shade is a gorgeous, as it looks like quite a deep colour but actually goes on as more of a natural tint to the lips. It has a nice sheen to it, and is perfect for those looking for a more natural tint to the lips instead of a bold statement.
NARS 'Steven Klein' Lipstick in 'Flamenco'
I received the Steven Klein Nars lip trio as a present from Hannah (of the blog HannerKing) over Christmas. Don't I have the best best friend ever? She knows me so well, and knows I love a good red lip! This is actually my first NARS product, and I have to say I'm super impressed. I think I need to expand my NARS collection a little bit...
I love how bright 'Flamenco' is, but it's not too overpowering or bold. It's just that next step up from the S&G gloss, as it's more pigmented but still not overly in your face. Hannah was 100% on point with this one, cheers hun!
L'Oreal Paris 'Colour Riche' Collection - 'Eva's Red'
A while back, I looked at some of the reds and nudes from the L'Oreal Paris 'Colour Riche' collection. Since then, I think I've always been in love with them. They're gorgeous shades and incredibly pigmented, which is fantastic considering the low price. In fact, I think I've shown a bit of restraint in only featuring two of the collection here! Eva's red is a true, deeper red colour with orange tones to it.
I have to admit it wasn't love at first sight with this one - I've always been weary of orangey toned red lipsticks as I didn't think I'd ever get on with them well. In all honesty, I think this is the only brownish-orange red that has ever caught my eye. It's definitely not for the faint hearted - but if you're looking for a shade to make you stand out this Valentines Day, then this may be the lipstick for you!
L'Oreal Paris 'Colour Riche' Collection Lipstick - 'Liya's Red'
The second choice of the collection that I have to pick is Liya's Red - I mean, just look how gorgeous it is! It has a bit of a blueish undertone to me but looks amazing and bold when on. Instead of being matte, I have to say it seems a bit of a cross between satin and matte to me. It goes on easily and applies even enough to only really require one coat, and it's not drying either.
The packaging on this collection has to be given a huge thumbs up from me - the black case with gold accents makes the lipsticks look a lot more high end than they actually are. Each lipstick also lasts for around 4-5 hours without smudging or moving - perfect for lasting through that little Valentines date!
MAC 'Rocky Horror' Matte Lipstick in 'Frank-N-Furter'
Ah, it wouldn't really be a 'top lipsticks' post without a little feature from MAC would it? I know that this shade was only in a limited collection and isn't available to purchase anymore, but it's just the perfect shade of red to represent Valentines Day. Little side note: this colour had already sold out in the UK by the time I got round to it. I was just a little bit lucky to spot a MAC near our hotel in Paris last year and get my hands on the last one in store.
The packaging is slightly different to normal MAC lipsticks - it has that iconic Rocky Horror design to it! Frank-N-Furter is the perfect shade of red to me, it can do no wrong in my eyes. It's that deep raspberry wine colour that just sets it apart from the others - it's a darker matte tone, but it works so well.
So unbelieveably, I actually managed to narrow my choice of reds down to just five. I'm still pretty amazed at myself! Overall I'm impressed at the wide range of shades I've picked - there are quite a variety, and no two colours are the same.
What lipstick are you going to be rocking this Valentines day? Are you going for a bold statement, or more of a neutral look? And what do you think of my choices? Let me know in the comments below!
