Believe it or not, there used to be a time when I never used to use a base for my foundation. I know, it's absolutely terrible, all that time I spent wondering why my foundation never seemed to last, and little did I know just one product could help with all of that. The moment primers entered my life, my entire makeup game changed, and I found myself with endless possibilities for a base for my makeup. Since then, I've tried and tested numerous primers, ranging from pore minimising creams to shine killing gels, and today I'm bringing you my current top 5.
The Clinique 'Super Primer' (RRP £21) is definitely more of a high end product, but to be fair its worth the price tag. There are 2 other alternatives in the range (colour correcting primers) but this one is for all skin types, and boy does it create an amazing base to work on. It's lightweight and oil-free so it doesn't suffocate the skin, and it really helps keep makeup in place all day without oil starting to appear and cause shine. The primer also works to slightly even out the skin tone and gives a slightly matte finish for you to start working on.
The Soap and Glory 'One Heck Of A Blot' Instant Perfecting Power Primer (RRP £10) is slightly more budget friendly and can definitely hold its own. More for people with oil prone skin, the primer helps to control shine and give more of a mattifying effect. It has more of a silkier and thicker feel to it than the Clinique primer, and it doesn't go on feeling wet like some other primers do. As I suffer with quite bad dry skin too I feel that this primer works well with my skin, and it really gives a nice base for makeup.
My 'No7 Stay Perfect' Primer is one I can't find on the Boots website, so I think it may have been limited edition. It's quite a small tube but the product does go a long way as its quite a creamy consistency. It glides on smoothly and flawlessly with a velvety finish, and sits on the skin well without clogging it up and feeling too heavy on the face.
Body Shops All-In-One 'Instablur' (RRP £15) is pretty well known within the blogging industry, and with good reason. In one word: it's amazing. Seriously, I absolutely love it. The primer blurs out imperfections and eases redness which is a massive plus in my eyes (I seriously hate redness), plus it helps minimise pores too. Similar to the Soap and Glory primer it's less of a liquid consistency and more like a gel, which to be fair I find a little easier to use than pure liquids.
I don't think it'd be much of a top 5 without Benefit's 'POREfessional' Face Primer (RRP: £26) making an appearance. Out of all the primers it's the most expensive, but I've found that my skin really gets on with it. As a balm it goes on the skin nicely and evenly, smoothing the appearance of any pores or imperfections. Plus, it's not heavy on the skin at all and feels quite lightweight, whilst also giving even coverage.
Overall, I think I seriously underestimated how useful and vital makeup primers actually are as a base for your foundation. There's a major noticeable difference with my foundation when I don't use a primer, and before long it starts to slip and shine starts to show through. Thankfully though if I use one of these primers the longevity of my makeup is more than doubled, and I can easily get through the day without much wear down.
