If there's one thing that's the bane of my life when it comes to makeup, its that shine that comes through around halfway through the day. Seriously, where does it come from?! I'm a notoriously bad dry skin sufferer, and I've never had problems with oil or shine before, so why does it crop up half way through my day after ages slaving away to get my makeup on in the first place?! Thankfully brands seem to have taken some serious notice recently, and some decent products have cropped up to tackle this problem - ranging from primers for use as a base to makeup, to products that can be used over the top to blot out the oil. So which products are the best of the best?
First up is the No7 Perfect Light Pressed Powder in Translucent. A velvet smooth and soft pressed powder, the compact is sleek in design and slips into my handbag easily without taking up much space. It actually comes in 4 different shades - translucent, fair, medium and dark, so if you wanted to use it as a finishing powder you can correspond it to your skin tone. For me, I prefer the translucent just as a finishing touch to my makeup without adding any colour. The powder itself goes on smoothly and gives a mattifying effect, and doesn't make makeup look cakey or clog up the skin. For £11.50 I have to say I think it's a bit of a bargain, and can rival the higher end products which do a similar job.
The Urban Decay 'De-Slick' Mattifying Powder is one of my favourites, and I love it's sleek and eye catching design. Similar to the No7 powder, 'De-Slick' is a pressed translucent powder that when used goes on to create an amazing mattifying effect. It's staying power is fantastic, and typically I have to use it around lunch time every day to get rid of any shine that's built up. But after that? I'm good to go for the rest of the day. It's a brilliant product, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone struggling with shine. If you're interested, you can catch my full review of the product here. Typically the product retails for £20 which can be seen as pretty steep, but in my eyes it was definitely worth the investment.
Slightly different is the Nyx 'Shine Killer' Primer*, which can actually work well with any of the powders as this one sits underneath the makeup. Whilst the powders would only be used as and when needed, the primer acts as a base for any makeup, effectively creating a layer that stops shine in its tracks before it begins to show. It's a lightweight and colourless gel, so it doesn't feel too thick or suffocating on the skin, and it goes on smoothly and gives the skin a matte texture. My makeup goes on top without any problems, and I find that if I wear this primer I hardly require a mattifying powder throughout the day, and sometimes not at all. It's quite affordable at £11, and for how well it combats shine before it even starts, I'd say it's worth every penny.
The Revlon PhotoReady Prime and Anti-Shine Balm is slightly similar to the Urban Decay powder as it's perfect in that it can be used as both a primer and a balm. I found that when I do use it as a primer it helps cover pores, as well as neutralising any shine that may be on the face already. The balm goes on smooth and translucent and has a nice velvety feel to it, meaning that it doesn't feel too cake-y or suffocating on the skin. It acts as a brilliant base for foundation too, and it goes on well and lasts throughout most of the day without needing a touch up. For only £9.99 it's a cheaper option than some of the others, and works just as well in my eyes.
Last but not least is the Benefit Porefessional 'Agent Zero Shine' Shine Vanishing Pro Powder. Porefessional was my go-to primer for a long, long time, so I was pretty pleased when Benefit expanded the range to include a few more products. Out of my top 5 this is the only product that comes in a powder form, something that took a little getting used to at first but actually works pretty well. It comes with a small applicator brush so it's perfect for use on the go, and despite being skin coloured it actually goes on transparent. It's brilliant at absorbing shine and mattifying skin, and I prefer using this powder for covering patches of shine instead of all over coverage. At £25.50 it's a pretty expensive product, but if you're a big fan of the Porefessional range it's probably worth the investment.
Altogether I can't actually believe there was a time in my life when I didn't use shine killing products. Seriously, how did I not know that such a thing existed?!
