I officially think I have the Christmas blues.
Is it just me, or does January feel like it has literally been dragging on forever? It feels like it's been much longer than 29 days, and it genuinely feels like Christmas was almost a lifetime ago. Is it crazy that I miss it already? The build up to that one day, the meticulous wrapping of presents, the get togethers with family and other loved ones. It's truly a season to bring everyone together, and now that it's gone, its hard not to feel sad about that. So instead of going back to our everyday lives, I've instead decided to share my top 6 picks for red lips to try and keep some of that festivity going. And if all else fails, these picks are perfect to give you that extra allure this Valentines Day!
First up on my top 6 has to be the Urban Decay x Gwen Stefani 'Rock Steady' matte lipstick, one of six limited edition lipsticks from Gwen's collection. With a rather creamy formula, the lipstick is a stunning deep red with a rather oxblood undertone. The coverage is quite thick aswell, and whilst I prefer a double coat to build it up, you could get away with just the one coat if that took your fancy. Rock Steady has a surprisingly long lasting time to it though, and with very little fading, something which I found pretty spectacular. Over 12 hours later the lipstick hadn't smudged or moved, and whilst the colour had faded a little, it wasn't actually a noticeable amount. Altogether, Rock Steady is a pretty solid colour if you're after a cool and creamy formula that doesn't feel too drying once it's worn off, then this is definitely the lipstick for you.
Second is one of my ultimate all time favourites, the gorgeous MAX x Rocky Horror Picture Show in 'Frank-N-Furter'. In my opinion you can never go wrong with a simple matte red lipstick, and from the swatch alone, it's pretty simple to see why Frank-N-Furter sold out so quick upon release. A stunning deep raspberry kind of shade, the lipstick has some undertones of blue which at first I thought would clash with my rather pale complexion. But thankfully there was actually no reason for me to worry, as Frank-N-Furter actually goes rather well with my skin tone and looks striking once on.
Bolder and brighter than my other choices, the Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Coture in 'Le Rouge' makes its way onto the list for a number of reasons, the main one being just how vibrant and red it is. Typically with my red shades I'll lean more towards berry and deep shades, but there's just something about this lipstick that calls out to you. With its bold and striking redness, Le Rouge is sure to catch the eye with its elegance and femininity. It would definitely go well with a smokey eye, and the creamy consistency and feel on the lips is perfect without being too uncomfortable or feeling like it's going to smudge everywhere. I have to give YSL some serious praise too for their packaging - the gold reflective casing is gorgeous and high end, although a bit of pain to photograph!
Well, it wouldn't be a top lipstick picks post without something CT making the list now would it? Now I know Charlotte Tilbury's 'The Queen' is technically a pink shade, but hear me out and I may yet convince you as to why it belongs on this list. Like all other lipsticks in the Matte Revolution range, The Queen is seriously pigmented and has a bold, opaque finish. With blue kinds of undertones, I initially thought this lipstick wouldn't be for me, but now I'm glad to say thats not the case at all. Just look how vivid it is against my pale skin! Even with its matte formula the lipstick didn't feel drying on the lips, and lasted throughout the day without me needing to touch it up. Additionally if you want to build the colour up the lipstick will layer up pretty well - or if you're like me and want to wear a less bold shade throughout the day, you can just use one quick swipe to give the lips a less dramatic pop.
I have a bit of an obsession with liquid lipsticks, and Colourpop have always been one of the top culprits as to why. The consistency of their products is amazing, and the prices are always an absolute steal for the quality you actually get. Colourpops 'Notion' is no different either - a deep, raspberry shade, it's actually more of a vampy kind of colour than my other picks, and much much darker. I definitely rock this more when I'm feeling back in my grunge phase, and it always pays off. Colourpop are notorious for their lipsticks being super pigmented, and Notion definitely lives up to that. My only issue with this lipstick, and I have the same feeling about most liquid lipsticks, is the drying quality. I love them don't get me wrong, but after a couple of hours I always find my lips feel quite chapped and dehydrated. Thankfully though, that's nothing a good lip balm can't fix!
Last up is my favourite liquid lipstick from NYX - the beautiful 'Cherry Skies'. A deep, creamy red lipstick, Cherry Skies glides on easily and is seriously pigmented. It's a very thick formula, and the creamy texture helps it to go on easily before it dries slightly and helps bolden the colour. A vibrant, cherry red colour, this shade always reminds me of Taylor Swift and her statement red lip. Once applied it doesn't take long for the lipstick to dry to a kind of semi-matte finish, with a small sheen to it. You can totally see where the 'Liquid Suede' name comes from, and I actually love the finished product that much that I've invested in a fair few of the shades available.
Overall, these 6 lipsticks are the perfect reds to help us combat the blues as we head on out of winter, plus they're ideal for sprucing up a makeup look for Valentines Day! What are your thoughts? Do you have some different choices to recommend? Let me know in the comments below!
